Research Scientist 2, Chemistry

Under the supervision of the Radioanalytical Laboratory Manager, conducts researches and method development pertaining to radiochemical analyses of radionuclides in water, food and other matrices using Gas flow proportional counting, liquid scintillation, gamma spectrometry, and alpha spectrometry. Leads in method development and research projects that are currently in progress as part of the Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) Cooperative Agreement. Perform analysis of various radionuclides in food outlined in the FDA grant. Supervises the radiochemical analysis of radionuclides in drinking water and other environmental samples in an NJDEP and USEPA certified environment.  Reviews and interprets federal and state laws, regulations.  Function as a project lead, providing assist in data compilation, statistical analysis, and preparation of reports, writing technical report and scientific manuscripts. Prepares applications for contracts, partnerships and interagency agreements and other grant funds through the design of technical research projects. 
 
PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WITH THE FOLLOWING KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Experience conducting radiological analyses in a regulated/certified environment using sophisticated laboratory instrumentations, including gas flow proportional counting, liquid scintillation, gamma spectrometry, and/or alpha spectrometry. Knowledge of EPA regulations and procedural methods requirements for radionuclides in drinking water and other environmental matrices. Knowledge of food analyses and environmental analyses including the most current analytical instrumentation utilized in chemical and environmental analyses. Good skills in writing technical report and scientific manuscripts. A solid record of peer-reviewed publications.

EDUCATION:
 
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master of Science degree in chemistry or other appropriate physical or environmental discipline.
 
EXPERIENCE:
 
Three (3) years of experience in chemical analysis or chemical research.
 
NOTE: A Doctorate in a physical, chemical, or environmental science discipline may be substituted for two (2) years of experience indicated above.
 
OR
 
EDUCATION:
 
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry or other appropriate physical or environmental science discipline.
 
EXPERIENCE:
 
Three (3) years of experience in chemical analysis or research AND one (1) year of experience in the operation of the gas chromatography mass spectrometer, gas chromatograph, high performance liquid chromatograph, fourier transform mass spectrometer, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, atomic absorption spectrometer, x-ray defractor, transmission electron microscope, or updated replacements thereof.
 
LICENSE:
 
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
