The Newborn Screening (NBS) Unit of the NC State Laboratory of Public Health is currently accepting applications for a Medical Laboratory Technologist II vacancy.  The primary purpose of the NBS Unit is to provide timely and accurate testing and reporting to identify potentially life-threatening conditions in babies born in North Carolina.  Successful candidates in this position will: perform testing and reporting to Follow-Up Personnel, necessary results of newborns in the detection Sickle Cell anemia  (SC), Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), Congenital Hypothyroidism (CH), Galactosemia (GAL), and Biotinidase (BIOT) deficiency using dried blood spot specimens derived from a heelstick or whole blood; perform Isoelectric Focusing (IEF) electrophoresis and cation-exchange High Performance Liquid Chromatography for SC, fluoroimmunoassays (FIA) for CAH, CF, CH and BIOT and enzyme-linked immunoassays (EIA) for GAL; assist in the evaluation, validation, and implementation of new methodologies to detect and characterize disorders that require early intervention to improve patient outcomes and will assist the Laboratory Supervisor and the Unit Manager in developing, maintaining, and updating standard operating procedures utilized in the laboratory.  Work for this position involves direct use of semi- and automated instrumentation, pipetting, and extensive use of computers and computer-driven instrumentation.   Candidates are required to perform hands-on maintenance and troubleshooting of instrumentation.  Work involves use of automatic blood spot punches, data interpretation and application of comprehensive quality assurance protocols and activities.

Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Demonstrated experience with general laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including automated and semi automated equipment.

  • Working knowledge of a quality assurance program including monitoring quality controls, performing proficiency testing, and tracking trends.

  • Experience working in a clinical laboratory team to provide reportable results.

  • Proven experience with clinical laboratory procedures and processes, handling potentially infectious materials, and the safety aspects associated with clinical laboratory testing.


Management Preferences:
  • Experience working in a clinical diagnostic or public health laboratory.

  • Experience working with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

  • Demonstrated experience in analytical troubleshooting skills and adequate maintenance of laboratory equipment.

  • Demonstrated skill in clear, concise, and professional verbal and written communication.


Physical Requirements:

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory technology, chemistry or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory in the assigned area; 
OR
Associate s degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of medical laboratory experience; 
OR 
Completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of medical laboratory experience; 
OR 
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
