The Health and Human Services Agency is seeking qualified individuals for the position of

COMMUNICABLE DISEASE INVESTIGATOR

Interviews and job offers will take place beginning the week of April 28, 2025. 

This position is eligible for appointment at step 1, $63,440.00 annually.
County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for Step Placement in Accordance with Compensation Ordinance 1.3.5.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Communicable Disease Investigators perform non-criminal investigations, counseling, and education regarding communicable diseases, understand, interpret, and work within following public health laws, rules, and regulations that govern HIV disease, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, and other communicable or infectious diseases.

The ideal candidate will be able to quickly develop rapport with a wide variety of individuals, discussing highly sensitive topics including medical and personal information such as sexual history and practices, in order to conduct thorough investigations/interviews.

HIRING TIMELINE AND DATES 


The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.
 
  • Job Offer and Background Process begins week of April 28, 2025. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening. 
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college/university or a certified foreign studies equivalency in a health-related science; OR,
  2. A bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college/university or a certified foreign studies equivalency in a behavioral, social or natural science, or a closely related field AND one (1) year of experience in communicable disease investigations; OR,
  3. An associate degree from an accredited U.S. college/university or a certified foreign studies equivalency in a behavioral, social or natural science, or a closely related field AND three (3) years of experience in communicable disease investigations; OR,
  4. Five (5) years of work experience in communicable disease investigations.

Notes:

  • A current CPR card is required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this class.
  • A State of California Phlebotomy License must be obtained within six (6) months of employment, or an equivalent license that allows phlebotomy such as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license with special certification for Intravenous (IV) Therapy and Blood Withdrawal.
  • Incumbents in the HIV, STD, and Hepatitis program are required to complete HIV Counseling and Testing Certification within six (6) months of employment.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
