Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Lead Poisoning Prevention (LPP) Program Manager, the Community Health Educator will support the outreach and education initiatives provided by the program. The Community Health Educator is responsible for developing and implementing primary and secondary prevention strategies to reduce lead exposure and prevent lead poisoning. This position will work with community partners, stakeholders, and residents within Harris County to increase lead awareness with a focus on community-based approaches.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains relationships with collaborative partners and cultivate new ones for the promotion of blood lead testing and the prevention of lead poisoning in Harris County.
  • Coordinates presentations given to community members, internal stakeholders, and external stakeholders on the hazards of lead exposure and lead testing.
  • Educates and informs public health professionals and pediatric healthcare providers on the requirements and recommendations for lead testing.
  • Attends community-based events, such as school events and health fairs.
  • Maintains records and collects the program’s metrics on community and engagement initiatives on a weekly basis.
  • Assist in the development of lead-based program material and media campaigns targeting vulnerable populations and areas within Harris County.
  • Manages the calendar for educational and community events.
  • Assists with electronic data processing by using the program EMR, Microsoft Excel, and any other related software.

Requirements

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: 

  • Six (6) months of experience working in community engagement, public health, health clinic, or related field.

Licensure:

  • Valid Texas Driver's License upon hired along with a good driving record.

General Information

Position Type, and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Full Time | Regular | Grant-funded
  • Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and an occasional Saturday.
  • Other days and hours as necessary.
  • Able to travel within Harris County jurisdiction.

 

Work Environment:   

  • This job operates in a professional office environment and in the field. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

 

Physical Demands:

  • This role requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to twenty (20) pounds and bending & standing for periods at a time.
