Associate State Medical Examiner
This is a non-merit position. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.
Associate State Medical Examiner (Physician)
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of Public Health, Office of the State Medical Examiner, is seeking an Associate State Medical Examiner (Physician).
The duties of this position include:
Perform or order a postmortem examination to collect evidence, document injury, determine etiology of disease, and determine cause and manner of death if required or authorized by section 331.802 or by rule.
Maintains complete records of all relevant information concerning deaths or crimes requiring investigation by the State Medical Examiner.
Creates a report on performed postmortem examinations in a timely and accurate manner.
Reviews medicolegal records and uses ancillary tests and consultations when appropriate to complete reports.
Testifies in court and depositions regarding findings and conclusions of postmortem examinations.
Discusses with legal next of kin explaining findings from death investigations.
Completes death certificates and authorized cremations.
Assists county medical examiners and law enforcement on procedures and determination of necessity of an autopsy and wording of death certificates.
Provides instruction/training of staff on medicolegal issues, autopsy technique, and practical application.
Presents lectures to a variety of audiences, including but not limited to the medical community.
Participates in appropriate continuing education in order to maintain expertise and licensure.

Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited school of medicine, completion of an internship program and licensure as a physician by the State of Iowa.
