This position operates in the Survey Section of the Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau (IBEB), Center for Health Protection (CHP), Public Health Division (PHD) of the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH).
IBEB's mission is to protect and improve public health by providing the most complete and accurate information on injury and behavioral health trends affecting New Mexicans. We achieve this by maintaining high-quality public health surveillance systems, conducting data-driven analyses on injuries, violence, substance use, and mental health, and fostering collaborations at the local, state, and federal levels.
The Survey Section collects and analyzes population health surveillance data with a special focus on injury, behavioral health, chronic diseases, and social determinants of health, by managing the two most comprehensive population health surveillance data systems in New Mexico and leveraging other data sources. The Survey Section's main projects include:
- The New Mexico Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (NM BRFSS)
- The New Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey (NM YRRS)
- Mental Health Surveillance and Epidemiology
Why does the job exist?
The BRFSS is the largest ongoing nationwide behavioral risk assessment that collects state representative data on health status, chronic diseases, injury prevention, etc. among New Mexican residents. This position is critical to the successful operations of the BRFSS, including but not limited to ensuring compliance with all policies and protocols, supervising the data collection staff, daily troubleshooting, and managing data cleaning and submission.
How does it get done?
- Directly supervise two positions and co-manage the data collection team
- Deliver new-hire training and routine training to staff
- Create and maintain operation protocols
- Assign and oversee the work of telephone surveyors.
- Provide and receive performance feedback. Conduct employee evaluations.
- Ensure compliance with all policies, protocols, and guidelines.
- Track data collection status with critical indicators.
- Identify challenges to data collection and provide solutions.
- Manage the questionnaire setup, data quality check, data cleaning, archiving, and submission.
- Conduct interview monitoring in the data collection team.

Employment Requirements
Working Conditions
The primary location for this position is Albuquerque. However, this position is expected to work at the Santa Fe office at least one day per week to best supervise the BRFSS data collection team.
The chosen candidate is expected to work up to 35 hours (part-time) to 40 hours (full-time) per week. The work schedule for this position is M-F 8 AM - 5 PM (including a one-hour unpaid meal break). An alternative work schedule proposed by the employee may be considered based on the agency's policy and operational needs. The chosen candidate is expected to occasionally work on weekday evenings and weekends based on operational needs.
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive phone and personal computer usage. Some travel may be required.
