The Detroit Health Department has been providing important public health services to Detroiters for over 100 years.
The Health Department has three major offices: Population Health, Clinical Services and Outreach, and Administration and Organizational Development. Each office works collaboratively with external partners and the community to create a public health system that supports the health of Detroiters across their lifespan.This is a Temporary Administrative Special Services (TASS I) position.
This Appointment Term is based on the availability of grant funds.

General Customer Service Tasks
- Greet and register patients upon arrival, ensuring accurate collection of personal and insurance information.
- Assist in preparing clients for their appointments by explaining the registration process and addressing any questions or concerns.
- Measure and record vital signs, ensuring accurate documentation to support patient care.
- Enter patient information and updates into the electronic health record system efficiently and accurately.
- Provide exceptional service to patients and families, fostering a welcoming environment that encourages open communication and trust.
- Registration and patient interface initial point of contact. The registration specialist enters pertinent patient data into the Detroit Health Department electronic medical record; conducts quality checks on data entered; completes clerical tasks including patient document collection and capture. Assures complete and comprehensive patient information entry for check in and check out.
- Provides supplemental data entry support to ensure all clinical activities are accurately entered into the electronic health record for accurate reporting to state partners as well as Health Department team.
- Assists with accurate record keeping for database entry for all clients at outreach events.
- Follows up with patients, as needed, to verify accuracy of data provided and completion of patient record.
- Files physical records and prepares necessary labels.
- Documents status of each data entry assignment
- Conducts individual quality checks on data entered to ensure accuracy.
- Takes on other duties as assigned and deemed necessary for clinical operations at the neighborhood wellness sites based on services being provided.
Registration
- Greet Clients as they arrive at the Registration point to check in.
- Gather and verify client’s documentation for registration is complete (proof of ID, insurance, etc.) and then enters required information into the electronic health record.
- Review all check in registration forms to ensure they are completed properly and legible.
- Alert staff when the client is ready for an appointment.
- Keep the registration area sanitized and clean for each new visit.
- Takes on other duties as assigned.
Check Out
- Greet clients at the end of each visit and provide appropriate follow-up information.
- Offer assistance for any outstanding items related to the visit.
- Check out client and assist with any questions or additional follow up.
- Assist with sanitizing the clipboards and registration area.
- Take on other duties as assigned.
General Customer Service Tasks
- Scheduling and appointment follow up.
- Monitoring site at point of entry and exit for safe and easy patient access.
- Coordination with all clinical staff to ensure optimal client experience.
- All additional clerical and customer service tasks as deemed necessary for cohesive clinical operations.
- Communicate with clinical staff and provide support to all clinical activities that may be reasonable under direction of clinical site lead and/or project coordinator.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITY:
Registration Specialists:
Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.
- High School Diploma or GED
- 1 years of experience
- Typing proficiency of 45 words per minute at 90% accuracy
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working in a healthcare setting.
- Prior experience working with patient records.
- Experience dealing with public.
- Additional clinical training including medical assistant, EMS, or certified nursing assistant.
EQUIVALENCY
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Registration Specialists:
- Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in data entry and patient information management. Strong critical thinking skills to address gaps in incomplete records.
- Customer Service: Excellent interpersonal skills to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for patients. Strong customer service orientation
- Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks efficiently in a fast-paced setting.
- Confidentiality: Understanding of HIPAA regulations and commitment to patient privacy and data protection.
- Ability to read, write and speak English, and follow oral and written instructions.
