Position Overview: 

Under the supervision of the Health Education Supervisor, the Health Educator is responsible for assisting in the implementation of education, training, and community outreach programs of Harris County Public Health (HCPH) Mosquito & Vector Control (MVC) Division.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Attends community outreach/engagement events by representing the Mosquito & Vector Control division as a public speaker and/or panel member at civic associations, schools, public/private groups and other entities.
  • Establishes collaborative relationships with schools, community organizations and other public/private entities for the promotion of Mosquito & Vector Control education and outreach programs and workshops. 
  • Assists in modifying community engagement programs for the education of mosquito and vector-borne disease and control and prevention. Co-facilitates education and training sessions as required.
  • Responsible for daily vehicle care of Mosquito and Vector Control Education assigned vehicles. Maintains Mosquito & Vector Control’s Mobile Mosquito & Vector Exploration Center through regular walk-throughs and ensuring a safe learning environment for community participants.
  • Prepares materials for education, training and community outreach workshops. Assists with in-house training of Mosquito & Vector Control personnel. 
  • Maintains records and submits monthly, quarterly and annual reports on community and engagement activities related to the responsibilities of the Health Educator position.
  • Special Projects assigned by Director or Associate Director. 
  • Other duties as assigned, including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.

Requirements

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Entomology, Biology, or other science-related fields from an accredited university.

Experience: 

  • At least one (1) year of community outreach experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License (Texas upon hire) along with a good driving record required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs including Office 365 (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.). 
  • Knowledge of effective health education campaigns. 
  • Ability to design and deliver educational programs that inform the public. 
  • Ability to give presentations to community groups, public health officials, schools, or other stakeholders. 
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Position Type, and Typical Hours of Work: 

  • Regular, Full Time. 40 hours per week.
  • Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday from 07:30 am to 04:30 pm. 
  • Other days and hours as needed to attend to community events.
  • Must be willing to flex work hours when required, including weekends.
  • Able to travel within Harris County as needed.

Work Environment: 

  • The job will have both office and field work. Office work will consists of computer and visual aid usage, filing paperwork etc. Field work will include operating a county vehicle safely, appearing/participating/representing MVC at a variety of functions, conducting outreach and training. May consist of indoor or outdoor venues.

Physical Demands: 

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to sit and drive with occasional breaks. Must be able to stand for extended periods with occasional breaks. Must work nights, weekends and holidays as required to accomplish the mission of MVCD.
