Lead Interoperability Researcher | RESEARCH SCIENTIST III (SOCIAL BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES)

The Genetic Disease Screening Program (GDSP) of the California Department of Public Health works to protect and improve the health of all Californians. This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by reducing the emotional and financial burden of disability and death caused by genetic and congenital disorders by supporting the routine surveillance, reporting, and investigation of birth defects in California.

The candidate works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (Epidemiology/Biostatistics), chief of the California Birth Defects Birth Monitoring Program (CBDMP) Section. The Research Scientist III (Social/Behavioral Sciences) will plan, organize, and direct scientific research studies of a highly developed scientific scope and complexity using behavioral theoretical models to perform validation, data analyses, process evaluation, data management, and documentation on integrating electronic health data into the California Birth Defects Registry and expanding the registry statewide. The incumbent will evaluate birth defects and other public health data and workflows and lead the development of scope and specifications for data quality validation and data management. The candidate will work closely with management and other research scientists to assess, manage, and communicate program needs.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Proficiency in principles of public health surveillance.
  • Proficiency in data integration, analytics, and visualization.
  • Experience with medical or clinical databases.
  • Ability to provide leadership in evaluation, development, and application of clinical public health data.
  • Knowledge of SAS/SQL statistical software and SQL Server platform.
