Public Health Nurse II/Immunization Coordinator

The Johnston County Health Department has a vacancy for a Public Health Nurse II / Immunization Coordinator in the Child Health Clinic.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Will work in the Child Health Care Clinic, performing history taking, patient education and treatment utilizing appropriate medical directives. Requires ability to plan and coordinate program requirements; ability to elicit needed information and maintain effective working relationships. Position will coordinate and implement the Johnston County Children's immunization program. Implementation includes vaccine administration and includes training of Health Department staff and school health nurses on use of the North Carolina Immunization Registry (NCIR). Position must have a working knowledge of Childhood immunization requirements. Requires close collaboration with county providers to promote implementation of vaccine administration and documentation in NCIR.

Administers immunizations: Immunization clinic operates at least 2 days a week by appointment and includes special seasonal vaccine clinics and rotation to other work areas.  Organizes and facilitates back-to-school mass vaccine clinics.

Reviews, updates, and/or develops immunization standing orders, policies and procedures annually (and as changes occur). Coordinates and provides immunization tracking and follow-up to assure optimal immunization status for Johnston County children. Maintains and requisitions an adequate supply of inventory of immunizations, supplies and educational material for the agency; Ensures safety of vaccines including storage and handling; Provides vaccine educational information to families; including possible side effects, schedules, and schedule return visits; assist with vaccine preventable disease outbreaks in Johnston County, and coordinates outreach activities to ensure immunization compliance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of, and skill in, the application of nursing theory, practice, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs; considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public health; knowledge of available resources and organizations and the ability to coordinate these as needed; general knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health, including health disparities; ability to plan, coordinate, and oversee the work of others; ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions; ability to work in partnership with patients and with other service providers to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships; ability to record accurately services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions; adequate computer skills to allow communication, patient record documentation, and accessing of information.

Desired Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience.  Necessary Special Qualifications - A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the N. C. Board of Nursing.
